Id Rather Be Me NOT You Its the Only Way I Can Own My Success

I’d Rather Be Me NOT You… Its the Only Way I Can Own My Success I recently offered to help out a colleague by “becoming her” for two hours of my work day. What a ride that experience was! I began this new “job” somewhat reluctantly; all I had going for me was my desire to help my colleague. I knew going in that I was probably not going to enjoy this. So, I pasted a determined smile on my face, quelled the nagging fear that I will fail miserably and reminded myself that it is only for two hours. The funny thing is that I was to do only a minuscule piece of her job: answer the phones professionally, take messages, transfer calls and direct visitors who might show up in the office. I was NOT asked to do any of the highly complicated things Liza does on a daily basis. So why this tension? Let me describe to you my initial minutes of sitting at her desk, which Liza and I laughed about later. First, I tried to make sense of the written instructions, get comfortable behind the desk and generally look very capable. My heart was pounding and I was already looking at the clock! It strikes me that when we are unsure of our skills and have trusted someone else to do what we typically don’t enjoy doing, we respond with fear and unease when put in a situation such as this. The phone rang and I felt my throat tighten up. I got through that moment only to be told, “You are not Liza.” Hello, don’t I know that? Then it strikes me that when we are faced with uncertain situations we can dig into what is familiar about our personality and use it to save that moment and in doing so, make it easier for ourselves. So, I said back, “you are right…I am trying very hard to fill her big shoes and will try my best to help you.” The caller laughed, I joined in and took care of her request. The minute hand seemed to move S-L-O-W-L-Y. I was surprised at how many times I peek at the clock. I recognize instantly that when you are NOT having fun, each task is a chore and I feel blessed to know that when I go back to doing what I truly enjoy doing, happiness will return with a bounce. Productivity and engagement are terms used frequently in our work world. These business terms make best sense when we identify why we enjoy certain things more than others and create opportunities to have “more of” those tasks in our work. Can you clearly identify your burn-out skills? TWO GRAND IDEAS Identify what you do well and find opportunities to use those skills. Motivated skills lead to increased enjoyment and career happiness. Ask people to give you feedback with examples on what you do well. Keep these endorsements and stories in a portfolioâ€"use them on your career documents and interview. At 4 pm, I begin to feel somewhat comfortable. I made one mistake so far and survived. I am reminded that mistakes are a way for us to learn, try something different and add to our portfolio. It also reminds me that I can reach out for help because people are willing to helpâ€"you must know how to ask the inquiry question. My body started to relax and I finally started to attend to some work I brought in to do with me WHEN people who pass Liza’s desk, stopped to talk to me and to each other. The number of conversations that happen around Liza’s workspace began to overwhelm me. I wanted to go into a burrow and stay there for a while and just breathe. And, that day was not even a super busy day at the office! I quickly realize that the environment in which we do our best and happy work matters. Both, the overall culture fit as it resonates with your values, interests, skills and personality traits as well as the “micro-environment” we create within that larger culture matters. How does your work culture and work space support your best and superior work? TWO MORE GRAND IDEAS Where do you get your energy from? Do you get it from engaging with the outer world, being around and with people OR do you prefer being in a space of inner thoughts, ideas and reflection? Remember, we are talking about preferences here, NOT skills. How do you create and organize your learning/working space? Be a detective and observe when and how you contribute in the most upbeat, joyful and creative manner. Maybe you like lists, order and schedules. Maybe you like “going with the flow,” variety and setting deadlines on the go? There isn’t a right or wrong answer. The more self-aware we are, the easier it is to create opportunities for success and growth. The clock finally says 5 pm! In my head, I am already driving down I-71. Even the fact that I will get stuck in traffic doesn’t bother me. So, would I sub for Liza again? Absolutely! One, I know that moving out of my comfort zone is good for me. Second, it confirms for me what I’d like to do “less of.” Sometimes it opens a new window of opportunity. How about you? Are there aspects of your work that you wish to do “more of” or “less of?” Do you wonder whether you can move toward doing “more of” what you are truly passionate about? TWO FINAL GRAND IDEAS Look at your current job/role and identify what you like/dislike in this role. If you are in transition, make sure that you are aware of this list before you say yes to an offer. A recent Gallup poll suggests only 45% of us are happy in our jobs! I think we need to change that number. Continue to reflect on what might be non-negotiable as you plan your career path â€" John Pepper, former CEO of Procter and Gamble talks about finding your North Star to define your life. What might your North Star be as you define your career happiness? Take ownership for your career happiness. What are you waiting for? And, welcome back, Liza! How to Get Rich After College Graduation - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Get Rich After College Graduation - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career When I graduated college I was interning for $12 an hour making cold-calls to financial firms. For me, the thought of being able to afford certain luxuries almost seemed out of the cards. Everyone feels that way after getting their degree. Its a very big hill to climb, but take it one step at a time, make intelligent decisions and try to follow the six theories below: 1. Learn resiliency one of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Youre never going to hit gold in the first hole you dig. Unless you are in the 0.1%, before you become successful, youre going to learn all about failure. The name of the game is to be willing to fail as many times as it takes until you reach success. 2. Have a vision wealth starts out with a vision. It has a direction which dictates the actions of the individual. Vision allows us to set goals and believe we can achieve them. Also, imagine how much easier life will be once you create that wealth. When we create vivid mental pictures of the future, success doesnt seem like so much of a pipe dream. 3. Know what youre talking about know your business inside and out. Consistently formulate creative ideas to make your clients happier, to make your product or service stand out. Also, dont just become an expert at what you do, continue to learn business. Study and be curious. 4. Avoid stupid expenses The best way to get rich is to spend your money wisely. Rockefeller built Standard Oil by consistently reinvesting profits, improving efficiency and cutting costs. The best companies know where to put their expenses and also know when something is a bad bet. Its fine to go to Las Vegas on vacation. Its a stupid expense to play any game against a casino. 5. Pick the right industries to go into Before you go into an industry, do your research and use common knowledge. Think future investment. For instance, if a paper company offers you a few thousand dollars more than a proven technology firm, take the latter. Wealth is planned, never made overnight. 6. Understand the simplicity of leadership Leadership is an overhyped term used by authors and, subsequently around many offices. There are 500+ page books devoted solely to the topic. When we think the term leader we associate it with a very outgoing, charismatic, confident, outspoken individual who gives orders and people almost blindlessly listen. Many young professionals think that they cannot lead because they are missing one or more of these traits, etc. In lower-tier firms, leadership is often correlated with basic manipulation tactics to try to ensure that the employees will do x or y. Really, the secret to leadership is hard work and learning how to effectively deal with others. A few final thoughts Learn to enjoy the journey. Sometimes were too focused on a goal and, once achieved we realized 5 years of our life went by. Try to avoid making enemies; stay away from conflict if possible. Expect to win and realize youll never be perfect and regardless of how rich you become, there will always be someone worth more money.

3 Easy Branding Tips for a Stronger Community - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

3 Easy Branding Tips for a Stronger Community - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Marketing is a must for brands and businesses who want to be noticed in the online world and generate more sales and leads. But equally important is building relationships, otherwise known as ‘community.’ There are key differences between each, but both marketing and community come together to serve a greater purpose that is about building the right relationships for greater opportunities. Here are several key takeaways on how each can work for your brand: 1. Have a strong focus. A well-laid out plan of action is the first place to begin with to attract new leads, and community should be a place for a great customer experience. This is the area where relationship building becomes a vital component to your strategy while keeping the needs of your target market in check. Stay active and pay attention to the needs of your customers and audience, and always be ready for change. 2. It’s all about partnership. Marketing by itself is not effective. But combining a partnership for the benefit of your customers is what makes your brand or business stand out. You will want to draw directly from your mission statement and stay consistent with your followers. 3. Encourage others to spread the word The best part of building a community along with marketing is the development of brand ambassadors. This can be through feedback, asking questions of your community, and creating trust. When your brand understands the difference between marketing and community it is much easier to focus on the right strategy for marketing. Keep your customer satisfaction as a priority, and always be ready to adjust when necessary.

3 Reasons to Build a Diverse Workforce

3 Reasons to Build a Diverse Workforce Photo Credit â€" Chartingyourfinancialfuture.comBuilding a great workforce takes no small amount of skill on the part of the recruiter. You are looking for that perfect combination of preparedness and excitement for the position. And, of course, you are working to select that one person that amplifies the great qualities your team already has, while still contributing a new and appreciated quirkiness to the fold.As you are working towards building the perfect team it may pay dividends to take one more thing into consideration: diversity. Incorporating diversity into the workplace can offer a number of significant benefits such as greater cross-collaboration among teammates, an improved cultural understanding, and perhaps even lower turnover. In fact, hiring for diversity is considered one of the smartest hiring practices.1. Boosting Cross-CollaborationevalBringing together a group of employees from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences more often than not breeds innovatio n. This is because it offers employees the chance to look at the same old problems through someone else’s lens, which can open up thousands of new possibilities. It is a powerful way to spark creative thinking and new ideas. In fact, some of the most innovative company swear by hiring for diversity to improve collaboration and creative capacity. One Harvard Business Review article discusses what the authors call a 2-D diversity, essentially having both inherited and acquired diversity traits. The authors found that companies hiring for 2-D diversity were 45 percent more likely to report growth and over 70 percent more likely to report expanding into a new market.2. Expanding into new CulturesThe ability to expand into new markets or demographics is largely correlated with workplace diversity bringing different cultures together. Diverse employees are likely able to tap into markets they have more experience with with greater ease, which can allow for a smooth transition into a new market.Furthermore, many customers feel more comfortable working with companies that have greater diversity, as they feel more of their specific needs will be understood and met.Even highly productive academic institutions are benefiting from integrating more diversity. For example, this year over 50 percent of Arizona State University’s incoming freshman class was minorities. The school was also ranked at the top of the “most innovative schools” list released by US New and World Report college rankings for 2016.3. Making Recruitment EasierSurprisingly, having a more diverse workforce can actually make recruiting quality candidates easier as well. Nearly two-thirds of people surveyed stated that they were more interested in working for companies with diverse employees. As the diversity of your company increases, so will the diversity of the people being recruited which means there will be more opportunities to find the perfect candidate. In addition to it being easier to find g reat employees, diversity in the workplace might also make it easier to retain them over the long term. Likely, a very diverse workforce builds a community that embraces all employees and promotes a culture that makes people want to stick around.evalEmployers can promote this by supporting employee endeavors to create internal programs, networking groups, and policies designed to reject any workplace discrimination.Building a diverse workforce is a rewarding experience. Doing so will help to build the company’s reputation in a positive manner as well as promote innovation and new ideas. It can help your company expand into new areas as well as attract new talent into your application pools. With all of these benefits, it is worth incorporating diversity into your goals as a recruiter.

This is used to inform the interviewers and to provide initial evidence; it is important that you complete this form as fully and accurately as possible. This is your chance to “blow your own trumpet” so to speak. Put yourself in the position of the assessors. If you were assessing candidates for such an important role, with such a huge amount of responsibility, what type of things would you look for? What would impress you, and what would deter you? What would you consider a good answer, in a royal navy recruitment test?In order to assist you during your royal navy recruitment test preparation, we have provided you with sample responses to a number of the biographical questionnaire questions. Royal Navy Recruitment Test Responses 1. Briefly describe why you wish to become an officer in the RN, RM or RFA.There are lots of reasons for why I would like to join the Royal Navy, but my primary motivation is the sense of achievement that working for the Navy would bring me. I am always someone who is looking to better himself, and accomplish the highest goals, and I believe that working in the Navy would provide me with the perfect platform to do this. Having conducte d extensive research, I’m incredibly impressed by the work ethic and camaraderie of service personnel. I am someone who loves to work as part of a team, and I want to make use of my past experience as a leader in order to train and motivate other people. I want to contribute to and support the work of our nation’s service personnel. I believe that my personal ethos, one of integrity, respect, professionalism and commitment to the greater good, matches up perfectly with the values of the Royal Navy, and this makes me the ideal fit for your organisation. 2. Describe a time when you have been in charge of a project or have had to lead a team, and what you did.In my previous position, I worked as a business administrator for a technology company in London. When my manager left the company, I was required to act in his role, on a temporary basis. It was my responsibility to maintain all services within the company until a new manager was appointed. My priorities were: delegation, co mmunication and motivation.I knew that I needed to take immediate action, to ensure everyone was on the same page. In order to do this, I set up and led a monthly meeting for all of the supervisors, as well as a weekly contact with each employee within my team. I appointed one of the supervisors to act as the point of contact for all members of staff in case they needed support during the interim period. I asked each of the other supervisors to take responsibility for organising elements of their own team and stated that I would be the point of contact for them if they needed advice, guidance or assistance. Once this new administrative system was in place, my priority was to motivate the supervisors and staff, especially during setbacks. The end result of this was that the department ran extremely efficiently during my time in charge, and eventually I was asked to take on the role full time. Everyone in the department said that they were extremely impressed by my ability to lead, wit h such short-notice, and were happy with the appointment.3. Describe a time when you have been part of a team, including details of your own role within that team.In 2008 I was one of four crew onboard a 48-foot yacht, sailing from the Azores to Plymouth. None of us had previously sailed offshore for such a distance, nor had we previously met each other. The skipper divided us into two groups so that we could ‘hot bunk’ the berths and we worked watches day and night. The four crews shared on a rota basis the responsibilities of: navigation, sail trimming, keeping watch, helming, weather forecasting, washing up, cleaning cabins, the galley and the heads. The weather varied from relatively no wind to Force 9, gusting Force 10, during which I was the only crew who volunteered to helm. I’d recently passed the RYA Ocean Yacht master course (theory) so was able to practice some astronavigation. On my part, I worked diligently to ensure that I played an essential role in the team. I t ook steps to ensure that I was completing each and every task to the maximum level of efficiency. When I had completed my tasks, I took steps to encourage and support the other members of the team, doing what I could to assist them. I was anxious to try and learn as much as I could during this trip, as I am always looking to improve, and therefore I specifically asked the skipper to train me in as many areas possible â€" to which he happily obliged.By the end of the trip, I am happy to say that I was a much more capable seaman, and had experienced working in almost every necessary area onboard the yacht. I really enjoyed this experience.4. Describe a time when you have set yourself a challenging goal or target and endeavoured to achieve it, including information on the outcome. In 2006 I decided that I wanted to raise money for a local charity. The aim was to raise £10,000 in total. In order to achieve this, I set myself the challenge of completing an iron-man challenge which includ ed swimming 2 kilometres, running a marathon before finally cycling 120 miles, all in one day.In order to achieve this, I knew that I would have to put a detailed plan in place. Although I have always been a fit and active person, this was no ordinary challenge, and I would have to prepare to the fullest if I wanted to succeed. I started out by planning my training routine. I decided that I would need 6 months to complete the task. I purchased a wall calendar and filled in my plan for each day, then put this up on my fridge. This meant that every day when I walked into the kitchen, I would see the plan, and feel motivated to keep pushing and get myself into shape.I gradually increased my distances over time and ensured that I ate healthily and avoided alcohol/junk food in the build up to my challenge. Whilst training, I also took control of fundraising, writing to large local companies requesting sponsorship. In my letters, I told them all about the cause and why it was so important to me, and also highlighted my determination to succeed in this endeavour. The end result was that I completed the challenge in 9 hours and 43 minutes, raising £10,784 in the process for a local children’s charity. The charity were thrilled with this, and commended me for my efforts. This entry was posted in Armed Forces, Assessment Centres, Job Competencies. Bookmark the permalink.
