Its time to switch to a 4-day work week, economists argue

Its time to switch to a 4-day work week, economists argueIts time to switch to a 4-day work week, economists argueWorking less would have a range of benefits for workers and employers and the world should embrace the four-day working week, was the message two experts brought to Davos 2019.Adam Grant, a psychologist from the Wharton School in Pennsylvania, said I think we have some good experiments showing that if you reduce work hours, people are able to focus their attention more effectively, they end up producing just as much, often with higher quality and creativity, and they are also more loyal to the organizations that are willing to give them the flexibility to care about their lives outside of work.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEconomist and historian Rutger Bregman, author ofUtopia for Realistsagrees, and explained that a shorter working week is not actually that radic al - policymakers have been trying to figure out how to give the workforce more leisure time for the best parte of a century. For decades, all the major economists, philosophers, sociologists, they all believed, up until the 1970s, that we would be working less and less, he said.In the 1920s and 1930s, there were actually major capitalist entrepreneurs who discovered that if you shorten the working week, employees become more productive. Henry Ford, for example, discovered that if he changed the working week from 60 hours to 40 hours, his employees would become more productive, because they were not that tired in their spare time. This position is backed up by Academic research. Multiple studies support the view thata shorter working week would make people happier and more productive, while OECD figures show that countries with a culture of long working hours often score poorly for productivity and GDP per hour worked.Meanwhile, one company in New Zealand that trialed a four-day work ing week last year confirmedit would adopt the measure on a permanent basis.Academics who studied the trial reported lower stress levels, higher levels of job satisfaction, and an improved sense of work-life balance. Critically, they also say workers were 20% more productive.Three-day weekend, anyone? This article was published on geschftlicher umgang Insider.Read theoriginal articleonWorld Economic Forum. What to Do if You Cant Take a Break Between Jobs - The Muse

What to Do if You Cant Take a Break Between Jobs - The MuseWhat to Do if You Cant Take a Break Between Jobs Theres a magical period of time that can only be found between the day you leave one job and the day you actually start a new gig youve got lined up. Theres nothing else quite like it- a real vacation unmarred by work emergencies, project spillovers, or impending deadlines. Itd be hard to judge anyone for dreaming of extending that blissful in-between phase and filling it with travel, rest, and all kinds of projects you havent had time to tackle. But usually, your old company wants you to stay as long as possible (at the very least the customary two weeks) and your new one wants you there as soon as possible. And sometimes that leaves you with just a weekend to yourself. How in the world are you going to fit everything into a measly two days? The hard truth is that you cant. But you can still have some fun, get some rest, and be ready to go. Here are a few tips to help you plan it right and make the most of the time you have. Celebrate- But Not Too MuchIts natural to want to celebrate. But dont overdo it. If youre going to indulge in some drinks (or greasy foods for that matter), do it on Friday and remember what you already know about moderation. The belastung thing you want is day drink your way through Sunday and arrive at your new schreibstube feeling hungover. Be Realistic About Your To-Do ListThe biggest mistake you can make is to be too ambitious, according to Muse Career Coach Tara Goodfellow. If you try to take all the things youd normally do in two weeks off and stuff them into one weekend, youre going to get overwhelmed and stressed. If you go away or do a big weekend event, youre setting yourself up to start drained, she says. And if you sign up for that spin class youve never tried before and go so all out that you cant move for two days afterwards, youll end up sore, exhausted, and cranky.Easy on the organizing projects too. On Friday night, you might be determined to do a full spring cleaning, but by Sunday you might freak out when its nowhere near done and youll have to spend the next few weeks living in the mess that is a half-finished organizing job. Frontload Any Prep You Still Have to DoThe key is to get this stuff out of the way as early as possible. That might mean setting out your first-day clothes when you get home on Friday, says Muse Career Coach Clayton Wert. Or maybe its sitting down with your laptop and a cup of coffee on Saturday morning and spending a few hours going over any materials youve been sent, jotting down some notes about things you want to remember or questions you have, or poking around LinkedIn to learn about your new team. Or perhaps its going out to do a little shopping on Saturday to pick up a new work bag to get you excited. Sleep, Relax, and Take Care of YourselfFirst, make sure youre getting enough sleep on each of the three nights youve got, Wert emphasizes. But beyond that, he says , do what you need to do to feel good, what puts you in a positive mindset.Once youve done your last bit of prep, start winding down and do whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed and recharged. That could mean going on a run, taking the yoga class you love, getting a massage, sitting down with a good book for a few hours, or visiting your favorite coffee shop.Unplugging and doing whatever activity you know you enjoy can help alleviate stress and anxiety you might not even realize is there, Goodfellow says. And if you are aware of your nerves, dont be afraid to share that with those close to you. Sometimes people dont realize how normal it is to be nervous. They think they should just be excited, she says. Its okay to communicate those fears and concerns and anxieties with people. A lot of times thats held in, she adds, but letting it out can provide some comfort. Focus on the Positive Things AheadSometimes the hardest part of the transition isnt starting the new job, but breakin g free from the old one and processing any difficult emotions it left you with. And such an abbreviated break in between might exacerbate that stress. Instead of still trying to hold on to the baggage, put that on the back burner for now. You cant carry that with you the first week or two of your new job, which is not to say you shouldnt go back to it, says Muse Career Coach Eloise Eonnet. But in this quick turnaround scenario, focus on the positive things ahead, she says. Imagine yourself in great detail a year from now at that company. What are the kinds of relationships youve built? What projects are you working on?Spending your time visualizing your happy future at your new job- rather than rehashing the terrible boss or toxic culture you dealt with at your last one- will help you start off on the right foot. Wed never argue that having just a couple days between jobs is exactly as refreshing as having a few weeks. But that doesnt mean you cant make the most of that weekend. And dont forget to think ahead. Carve out some time for self-care in the first weeks at your new job, even if its just slotting in a yoga class every Thursday or time to go to the park every weekend. Finally, plan a real vacation or even just a long weekend, whatever your new time-off policy and company culture allows. Make sure its not too far out of sight and start looking forward to it.

How to Find a Job That Fits Your Life

How to Find a Job That Fits Your LifeHow to Find a Job That Fits Your Life Finding a job that ideally suits you is a process of self-discovery. A fitting professional role should refine your strengths and give you room to grow and advance , while a suitable cultural fit should complement your lifestyle and resonate with your personality and your needs. As a job hunter, it can be difficult to recognize potential fit from the interview process alone. Although you may have the chance to meet with several leaders and team members on multiple occasions, an interview cant totally reveal what it might be like to work in a given environment. Thats why your prep is key. Conducting a reflective and thorough search - thinking through what you want in a role and researching and outlining what you need from an employer - can help you find a job that truly suits you. After all, youre not looking to punch a clock, youre looking for a job that fits your life. Heres how to pu rsue itBefore you can decide what youre looking for in a new role, clarify how you feel about your current position. Decide whats working for you and identify where you crave change. Professional Development Coach Hana Ayoub of Hana Ayoub Coaching recommends this exercise I like to look at an employees energy level to determine how aligned they are with their current role. Its a key indicator to evaluating job fit. I ask my clients to move through a typical workweek and consider when and how often their role takes them from a baseline level of energy to invigoration. This can potentially illuminate a lack of intellectual stimulation or motivation for their current role. It also isolates the areas of the role where they are aligned, and they can potentially use that as a compass to lead the way for the upcoming job search. The direction in which your compass points might invite risk, which can feel stressful. But if your job has been making you feel vapid, then the prospect of t aking a risk can be a refreshing thrill. This may signal that you are ready for higher stakes. Ayoub writes If a big professional change crosses your mind, then it warrants exploration. Exploration simply means to tune into the dialogue with a sense of curiosity to understand it better and doesnt bind you to take action. But give it the airtime as soon as you can, otherwise, it will return with more intensity and possibly frustration. A trend I see often in my coaching practice is the volume of wanting a career change only increases over time it rarely reverses itself. Its more healthy and efficient to approach a job change when its an early-stage consideration, and not when it feels overdue. In other words, the time is now. Use this momentum to explore what position and what companies look like they could suit you, and give you the opportunity to move into your next professional phase. Benefits are not just add-ons or perks. They keep you healthy, comfortable and well-positioned to enact your best work. Interestingly, 57% of job seekers weigh benefits among their top considerations before accepting a new role. You can learn a lot about them using Glassdoor . Not only will you find lists of benefits companies offer such as PTO, family leave, health and dental insurance, 401K information, and details about flexible arrangements such as telecommuting, you can also read employees feedback about the coverage. Additionally, Glassdoor reviews offer a window into a professional culture the leadership vibe, the professional pace and, generally, how it feels to be on staff there. You may also get a glimpse into the position youre pursuing. Another helpful feature-you can see how staff rate their CEO , which tells you a lot about the management. Decide what benefits are most important to you, and weave those into you emerging professional goal.Every employer in the world wants to hire great people who stay productive and engaged. And every person wants to fin d a job they love. Unfortunately, great employees and a perfect job are difficult to find. However, being an informed candidate increases the likelihood of being hired.Once youve done some soul searching and you know what position seems a good next step, what companies appeal to you and which benefits matter to you most, you can launch a targeted search. Searching for a job is a multi-faceted project, and the end result has a significant impact on your life. So take your time, and do it right. Ayoub writes Instead of thinking of finding the right job fit as a series of trials and error, I like to think of it as an evolving work in progress. The distinction here is to get in motion, reflect, and make strategic decisions to continue moving forward. There is no such thing as a misstep all experience provides information to learn from in order to move forward. Its important to shed the expectation of having a clear linear professional path, or that its a one and done process. Inste ad, embrace the mindset of an evolving career as personal priorities and market needs within your industry change over time.

3 Mistakes That Prevent Grads from Finding a Job

3 Mistakes That Prevent Grads from Finding a Job3 Mistakes That Prevent Grads from Finding a JobAccording to a recent New York Times editorial by Matthew C. Klein, a 24-year-old research associate at the Council on Foreign Relations, the millions of young people who cannot get jobs are in danger of losing their faith in the future.Klein also laments that unemployed grads are indefinitely postponing the life they wanted and prepared for, and because of the tight job market, his generation will have lost years of career-building experience. Its unfortunate that recent college grads are having such a difficult time finding jobs. But whats more unfortunate is that their deeply flawed communications skills are making them unhirable. The reason why grads are failing in their messaging efforts is because they mistakenly believe that hirers are looking for candidates with the most impressive credentials to fill open job roles. In the pre-2007 world, that may have been the case, but in the current contracted job market, the reality is quite different.Grads are also following the direction of career specialists whose guidance is based upon pre-2007 assumptions, and who havent recalculated their information to be more appropriate for current job market conditions. The grads misunderstanding of existing job market realities, coupled with the outdated advice of the specialists, have resulted in three fatal mistakes that are causing grads to struggle in their job searches1. Resume overconfidenceAfter graduating from college or graduate school, most young adults have built remarkable resumes for themselves, replete with notable accomplishments, credentials, and experience (ACEs). These ACEs have been carefully chosen and developed over many years with a single goal in mind to create employment opportunities at firms that would recognize the talent that the grad possesses, and can bring to their organization. The problem is that most grads have never figured out, or are unable to explain, how their ACEs would benefit the organization that they wish to work for. This would include how their ACEs would help them make an organization money, save it money, or enhance its image in the marketplace. These three benefit areas are what firms expect their new hires to produce, and if a job candidate is unable to clearly, concisely, and convincingly explain how he/she can make them happen, the organization will hire someone who can even someone with a less imposing resume.Solution Grads should focus less on the content of their resumes and more on how this content would help deliver profits, savings, or improved brand awareness to a prospective employer.2. Incomplete or non-existent researchCareer specialists suggest that job candidates do research on the companies where theyd like to work. The research thats recommended includes going to the companys website and learning the history of the company, the names of the principals, etc.If a grad truly wishes to receive a job offer from a particular organization, this kind of scant, incomplete investigation will not get him/her hired. Instead, grads should seek to become experts in the company, the companys industry, and the companys competition in order to explain how his/her ACEs can help the firm to reach its goals.Grads need to visit the Media or In The News pages of the companys website to survey the companys developments, initiatives, and plans. They must study business intelligence sites such as Hoovers.com and Vault.com to find out about the accomplishments and culture of the organization. They should also search for articles, analyses, and coverage of the company in leading business journals and industry trade publications, and then contact the writers of these pieces to discuss the companys successes, failures, and challenges. To stay aware of the most recent news, they should sign up for Google News Alerts about the company.Solution Grads must conduct strategic, comp rehensive, and resourceful reconnaissance on the company where they want to work. Their newfound knowledge would allow them to explain how their ACEs would help them to be an asset for the company.3. Absence of an interview strategyArmed with their golden resumes, many grads go into job interviews with the mentality of here I am, heres what Ive done, what do you think? When jobs were plentiful and organizations were scrambling to fill their ranks with top tier talent, that strategy was successful. Not anymore. In the job market of today and through the foreseeable future, grads must shift their focus from accumulating ACEs to implementing them. And in their job interviews, they need to follow a precise plan of explaining how their vast achievements can help a company to realize its objectives and overcome its challenges.Solution Grads must use their interviews as an opportunity to speak less about their need for a job and more about how they can help a potential employer meet its need for a solution. It wouldnt be difficult for todays grads to shift their messaging approach to be more employer-centric. If they begin and stick to the above described process, theyll get improved results in their search, and eventually, an offer for a job that they truly want. Heres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own Luck

Heres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own LuckHeres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own LuckConventional wisdom states that luck is a matter of chance, similar to rolling a pair of dice. Maybe someone you know binnenseems to snatch up the best job opportunities, your friend stumbled upon a great idea, or an acquaintance manages to maintain a happy relationship. But what is it that makes some people luckier than others?Richard Wiseman, a British psychology professor at the University of Hartfordshire, has been studying how luck plays a role in our lives. He wanted to see how chance opportunities come about and their impact on peoples lives. He began by examining the difference between self-professed lucky and unlucky people.Wiseman found that lucky people score significantly higher on extroversion. They smile twice as often and engage in mora eye contact. Their sociability, Wiseman explains, helps them increase their likelihood of a lucky opportunity because they meet more pe ople, connect better, and maintain relationships.Unlucky people, on the other hand, scored twice as high on neuroticism. To see how anxiety affected people, subjects were asked to watch a moving dot in the center of a computer screen, as large dots unexpectedly flashed at the edges of the screen. Almost all participants noticed these dots.To increase anxiousness, the experiment was repeated with another group, who were offered a financial award to focus on the center dot. More than a third missed the large dots on the edge of the screen that popped up.While anxiety helps us focus on a task, it also blinds us to other opportunities. As a result, unlucky people miss out on prospects because theyre too busy worrying about one thing. They develop tunnel vision in their career, missing viable job opportunities. Or, they might talk to a few select people at a social gathering, and then lose out on meeting other interesting people.Lucky people, on the other hand, are open to new experience s. Theyre more willing to talk to new people, travel to new places, and try new things.A Lucky Attitude Toward LifeWiseman conducted another experiment. This time, he gave people a newspaper and asked them to count the number of photographs inside. Unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs. Lucky people took seconds. On the second page, there was a large message that read Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper. Unlucky people tended to miss the message, while lucky people spotted it right away. The self-professed lucky people were simply more observant.Lucky people are also optimistic. They have positive expectations, which lead to self-fulfilling prophecies. Even if things take a turn for the worse, they can spot the good in a situation. Unlucky people might see the same situation and only point out the negatives. Not only do positive expectations help people become happier, but they can also help make the most of difficult situations. How to In crease Your LuckTo see if unlucky people could turn their luck around, Wiseman enrolled his participants in his luck school, where he put people through a series of exercises to increase their luck. The results were astonishing. After one month of enrollment, 80% of people reported themselves as happier, more satisfied with their lives, and most importantly, luckier. The lucky ones became luckier, and the unlucky turned lucky. They had been taught how to spot good opportunities, have a positive outlook, and to make better decisions. To increase your luck, you can practice what the luck school participants didKeep an open mind (and pair of eyes) Worrying about obtaining a goal endlessly can unknowingly close you off to other possibilities. Having an open attitude and looking around for new opportunities can open you up to lucky chances.Look on the positive side Focusing only on the negatives dampens your spirits and future expectations. When you go from complaining about scraping your knee to being grateful that it wasnt any worse, it becomes easier to try new things.Do something out of the ordinary this week Routines can lead to ruts, whether its talking to the same people, eating the same food, or doing the same type of work. Stepping outside your boundary increases the likelihood of a lucky break. Many often attribute other peoples fortunes to good luck, while their own misfortunes are the result of bad luck. Its true that some people are born with advantages, or events happen to us that are outside our control. You can always do something to build upon what you have. When you open yourself to new places, practice gratitude, and step outside your routine, you might find yourself getting lucky. This article was originally published on Inc.
